Calling Legal Experts!

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers, their professional practice and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales in the public interest. We are responsible for setting education and training requirements, setting standards, authorising organisations, monitoring the service provided, and handling complaints. Barristers work at the heart of our justice system, so the BSB's mission is fundamentally important to the maintenance of the rule of law. It is an exciting time at the BSB as we embark on a new strategy to continue to regulate in the public interest, support those we regulate to face the future, and ensure there is a strong and sustainable regulator for the Bar.

With our new strategy in place, we are doing some things differently. APEX (the Advisory Pool of Experts) is a new way for us to obtain advice and support as we develop policy. We want to engage a range of people – including practitioners.

So why would you be interested in doing this?

We're offering a flexible way of providing input on big, interesting topics in policy development. We'll recognise your appointment and your expertise by publishing details of APEX members on our website and telling people when you've contributed to our work. You'll be paid for your time. You'll become part of a group of experts from a range of different specialisms, with regular opportunities to come together and learn. You'll be able to discuss issues in a robust way with our staff, our Board, other experts and often our other stakeholders too. You'll have the opportunity to make a difference, at an early stage, in how policy develops in the legal sector. There's a lot going on so there are plenty of big, complex issues to get involved with. If this appeals to you, please consider applying.

We seek a competition law expert to advise us on the promotion of competition in the provision of legal services. The successful candidate will be an experienced practitioner in competition law, with a strong understanding of competition impact assessment and market regulation.

All applicants for this role must be legally qualified, have five years' post-qualification experience and be currently authorised to practise by an approved regulator under the Legal Services Act 2007.

Please note that we also have vacancies available in equality and diversity law (1 role) and regulatory law, particularly constitutional, human rights and public law (3 roles).

APEX members will enter into a consultancy agreement for services with the BSB, and will not be employed by us. The agreements will not guarantee a particular level of work, but will be for up to 10 days' worth of time per year. Our day and half-day rates are: £308 per day and £154 per half-day, plus expenses as permitted by our expenses policy.

The BSB is required to keep its regulatory activities separate from any representative activities in relation to barristers, and specifically we must remain independent of the Bar Council. We therefore require that experts do not at the same time have any close relationship with the Bar Council, eg as a member of a Bar Council representative committee, working group or as an advisor to the Bar Council. Members will be asked to confirm their eligibility at the time of appointment and throughout the duration of their appointment.

For more information on the above position or any of the other positions, including how to apply, please visit our website: https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/media-centre/press-releases-and-news/legal-experts-needed/

If you would like to discuss any of the positions in more detail, please contact Rebecca Forbes, Governance Manager on 020 7092 6806.

Closing date: Monday 24 October, 9:00am.

Interviews will be taking place in London between 14 November and 18 November.

The BSB aims to recruit talented candidates and values diversity in background, skills and experience. We are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all applicants irrespective of race, sex, disability, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, maternity or pregnancy, marital or civil partnership status or gender re-assignment.
