Org. Setting and Reporting
The post is located in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Geneva, within the Sustainable Energy Division (SED). This is one of the substantive sub-programmes of UNECE. SED works to promote a sustainable energy development strategy for the region, with following objectives: sustained access to high quality energy services for all individuals in the ECE region; facilitate a transition to a more sustainable energy future and introduce renewable energy sources to reduce health and environmental impacts resulting from the production, transport and use of energy; sustained improvements in energy efficiency, in production and use, particularly in countries with economies in transition; well-balanced energy networks tailored to optimise operating efficiencies and overall regional cooperation; security of energy supply; and integration of energy restructuring, legal, regulatory and energy pricing reforms, as well as of the social dimension into energy policy making. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Energy Industry Section. The Energy Industry Section of SED includes sustainable energy activities in the areas of coal, natural gas, electricity and resource classification.

Responsibilities
The incumbent assists in implementing UNECE's sustainable energy sub-programme and extrabudgetary fundraising. The incumbent is expected to carry out the work with a significant degree of independence, seeking advice from the Section Chief when necessary. Under the direct supervision of the Section Chief and within delegated authority, the incumbent:
1. Participates in the design and implementation of the programme of work of the Committee on Sustainable Energy, especially the work related to clean electricity from fossil fuels, coal-bed methane, coal, thermal power, oil and new and renewable sources of energy;
2. Organises and provides secretariat support services to meetings of the subsidiary bodies of the Committee, in particular the Group of Experts on Clean Electricity Production from Fossil Fuels and the Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane, as well as seminars, workshops and study tours on sustainable energy and clean electricity production and coal-bed methane related matters;
3. Assists in the preparation of general energy studies and reviews and prepares reports, periodic surveys, discussion papers and background documentation for meetings and other purposes related to the situation and prospects of clean electricity production, coal-bed methane, coal, clean energy technologies, oil, and renewable sources of energy;
4. Keeps abreast of industry and market developments related to sustainable development, clean electricity production, coal-bed methane and use of coal and oil as well as new and renewable sources of energy;
5. Establishes and maintains relations with government departments, international organizations and the business community to enlist their support and contributions to the areas of work described above.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in economics, business administration, engineering or related field. A first-level university degree in any of these fields, in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in energy and sustainable development is required. At least one year working for the United Nations Common System is desirable. Experience in working on coal mine methane or renewable energy is desirable. Experience in organizing and providing secretariat support to meetings for either intergovernmental organizations or the private sector, is desirable. Experience in producing written publications on sustainable energy related topics is also desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required; knowledge of French or Russian is desirable.
