Applications are solicited for the position of Economist/Senior Economist at the Joint Vienna Institute (JVI), Vienna, Austria. The JVI—an international organization—is a regional training center created in 1992 by Austria, the International Monetary Fund, and several other international organizations. The JVI's objective is to train public sector officials from countries in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and selected other countries. Drawing on its longstanding partnerships and the expertise of its member organizations, the JVI offers a unique set of courses, seminars, and workshops, mostly in the area of economics.

This fixed-term position is full-time, initially for two years with the possibility of renewal, and carries a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience and qualifications. JVI staff members are exempt from national immigration restrictions.

Duties: The successful candidate's duties include the following:

- Teaching: Teaching and coordinating several training courses per year in the areas of macroeconomic policy, finance, fiscal and monetary policy, or other specialized topics, often in conjunction with the IMF (Institute for Capacity Development and other departments) and/or the Austrian Authorities;

- Curriculum development: Active involvement in the continuous review of the existing curriculum, as well as in the development of new JVI-sponsored courses in collaboration with the IMF, the Austrian Authorities, and other organizations. Course development will include the preparation of lectures, hands-on workshops, and case studies based on country experiences;

- Research: Conducting analytical work on economic issues relevant to the JVI's training mission and, as the occasion arises, participating in outside conferences and seminars;

- Other: Active engagement in contributing to and/or leading internal working groups and outreach projects; also, depending on experience, guiding and mentoring more junior colleagues.

It is expected that the successful applicant will take up the position as soon as possible.

Qualifications

- Ph.D. degree in economics or finance and a demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research;
- Strong teaching record, especially in the area of applied macroeconomics and economic policies; ability to teach in the areas of finance and/or econometrics would be highly desirable;
- Strong analytical skills in macroeconomics, fiscal issues, or finance, and at least three years of practical experience in analyzing economic issues and providing policy advice;
- Strong interpersonal skills, initiative, and ability to work effectively in teams;
- Strong drafting skills;
- A solid knowledge of statistical and econometric techniques and related software, including EViews and Stata; familiarity with Matlab is a plus;
- Fluency in English; working knowledge of Russian, German, and/or Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian would be a plus.
