Head of Data - Freight

Uber Economics logo

Uber
San Francisco - United States
S: Competitive

At ATG, we are ambitious, engaged and excited about transforming the way the world moves. With locations in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Toronto, the Advanced Technologies Group is comprised of Uber's self-driving engineering team dedicated to self-driving technologies, mapping, and vehicle safety. Our teams are passionate about developing long-term technologies that advance Uber's mission of bringing safe, reliable transportation to everyone, everywhere.

Our work doesn't end with transporting people. We are also developing self-driving truck technology to move goods more safely and cost effectively around the world.

Job Description

Trucks move everything you buy, why shouldn't booking a truck be as seamless as booking an Uber?

Uber Freight connects shippers with truckers, much like the way the Uber connects riders and drivers. The Uber Freight team believes that empowering truck drivers will bring more open, efficient, and increasingly safer transportation to our roads. We are a team of sharp, entrepreneurial individuals who are redefining the movement of goods around the world. We are currently looking for candidates to join our growing team who share our enthusiasm for tackling today's toughest challenges in transportation.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Uber Freight is building a marketplace for shippers and carriers to provide a reliable, intelligent, and cost-effective way to move freight. Data, naturally, lies right at the heart of this. Here's a breakdown of specific responsibilities:
Leading and continuing to build a team of data analysts, data scientists, and data engineers with a cross-functional set of stakeholders. Your team will support data and analytics for all business functions (engineering, product, operations, legal).
Own the entire data engineering pipeline from start to finish, including ETLs, data modeling, and upstream data dependencies.
Carry out stand alone research and analysis that prepares us to seize data opportunities as we continue to grow.

The Freight team is less than a year old, so you'll be coming into a role where you'll have the opportunity to own your products all the way from ideation through maturity, and you'll be able to build an organization as you see fit.

Data Scientists on marketplace teams focus strongly on the mathematics and engineering related to optimizing the economics and operations of Uber's marketplace, regardless of whether it's ridesharing or freight. Therefore, particular preference is given to a candidate's direct work and/or leadership experience in these topics or with backgrounds in Economics, Econometrics, Operations Research, Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, Statistics, or similar.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Minimum 3 years data science leadership experience, managing organizations of 10+ stakeholders.
Experience supporting the analytics needs of all business functions (operations, product, research and development).
Experience recruiting and successfully building out new organizations from 1-2 employees to 20+.
Domain expertise in operations driven organizations, including but not limited to: logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or freight.
Strong quantitative background: MS or PhD preferred.
Familiarity with technical tools for analysis - Python (with Pandas, etc.), R, SQL/HiveQL/Presto. Demonstrable familiarity (work experience, Github account) with programming concepts. Go or Python skills and previous software engineering background a plus.
Organizational skills and the ability to execute and own a complete research project - go from idea to experimentation to prototype to implementation.
Driven and focused self-starters, great communicators, amazing follow-through - you aggressively tackle your work and love the responsibility of being individually empowered.
Scrappy, Entrepreneurial mindset - you're comfortable making do with what you have and building toward the future.

PERKS:
Employees are given Uber credits every month.
Ground floor opportunity with the team; shape the strategic direction of the company.
The rare opportunity to change the world such that everyone around you is benefitting the product you built. We're not just another social web app, we're moving real people and assets and reinventing transportation and logistics globally.
Sharp, motivated co-workers in a fun office environment.

BENEFITS (U.S.):
401(k) plan, gym reimbursement, nine paid company holidays.
Full medical/dental/vision package to fit your needs.
Unlimited vacation policy; work hard and take time when you need it.
