Head of Economic Policy

Role Summary:
The Head of Economic Policy role is a high profile, influential and exciting opportunity at the heart of the CBI, the UK's leading business organisation. The CBI speaks on behalf of the business community with over 190,000 businesses in its network. With a changing relationship with the EU and an uncertain global environment, the UK economy and business community faces many challenges. You'll shape the strategic direction and the delivery of CBI economic policy positions, particularly ahead of UK Budgets and Autumn Statements. The role involves regular engagement with government ministers and officials to advocate these positions and discuss policies. The role also involves regular engagement with business leaders, executive boards and other business decision-makers to form CBI positions and share intelligence on current economic trends and the policy landscape. There are regular public-speaking opportunities, including at conferences and to the media. The individual will be based in our London office, reporting to the CBI Chief Economist and will lead and manage a high-performing team of 5 economic, tax and policy specialists, which sits within the Economics Directorate.

Key Responsibilities:

Fiscal policy
• Lead robust economic analysis to help formulate CBI positions and build evidence to support them
• Deliver effective Budget and Autumn Statement submissions which reflect the broad views of CBI members and take account of the economic, fiscal and political context
• Develop strong relationships with senior government officials, ministers on CBI policy positions
• Present the macroeconomic outlook and CBI policy positions at conferences and to the media

Tax
• Promote the views of CBI members on business tax issues, including corporation tax, business rates and indirect taxes
• Lead CBI work on international tax, including the OECD BEPS process to modernise the system
• Help to ensure a constructive and effective voice for business in the public tax debate
• Engage CBI members and lead the work on two of the CBI's most important business committees – the Tax Committee and the Economic Growth Board

Working with others
• Building a strong working relationship with government officials and ministers, and think tanks, showing the CBI as a highly credible, trusted voice
• Maximise our offering to CBI members and targets through our work, including exploring commercial opportunities through the products and services we provide
• Strong outreach to CBI members across the country
• Build a strong network of Finance Directors and Tax professionals, providing economic and political insights to help them make better decisions
• Lead and manage a high performing team and support staff development
• Collaborate with policy, commercial and communications teams to support organisation-wide goals

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
Essential
• Proven background in economics especially experience working on economic policy
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong strategic awareness
• Excellent leadership and management skills

Desirable
• A track record managing staff and leading a team
• Understanding of business tax issues, including international tax policy developments
• Technical skills on fiscal accounting, cost-benefit analysis or macroeconomic modelling
