Lead/Senior Economist - Andean Countries Department

You will perform a wide range of functions that contribute to the achievement of economic growth and social development, providing monitoring and analysis of development needs and outcomes within the context of the Inter-American Development Bank's mandate.

What you will do:

Analysis and Research
• Design, coordinate and carry out research on issues of importance to the economic and social development of the region.
• Build connections with other research institutions and multilateral organizations to encourage intellectual debate and investigation.
• Help the IDB gain a broader view of economic issues to promote innovation, creative thinking and intellectual curiosity.
• Review problems and issues, integrating, analyzing, and interpreting complex and diverse information to develop innovative solutions.

Strategy and Programming
• Develop strategy formulation and implementation, carefully framing economic issues and alternative approaches.
• Influence and impact policy discussion through advanced knowledge of sector and/or country economic issues.
• Articulate technically sound and compelling analysis on IDB strategies, identifying economic and sector work in support of the country's programming process and country strategy implementation.
• Raise technical standards of economic analysis and research that contribute to strategy formulation.
• Participate in the formulation of the Bank's operational strategy in the country. Also contribute to the development of new tools and methodologies.

Knowledge Management and Dissemination
• Build networks with international organizations, academic institutions and professional bodies to exchange relevant information, promote cooperative research initiatives and expand the influence of the IDB
• Develop plans for the dissemination of economic strategies and policy recommendations, identifying target audiences and appropriate communication mediums.
• Ensures that research and knowledge acquisition activities are aligned with the business interests of the IDB
• Develops program of knowledge products for the Region from input across the IDB matrix and in concert with country and sector experts
Relationship Management
• Use relationships to influence economic strategy and priorities.
• Engage in broad discussions on substantive economic issues with senior policy makers to anticipate needs in economic research and influence the IDB's research agenda
• Leverage partnerships with government officials, academics and relevant third parties to better inform IDB priorities, operations and programs.
• Promote improved service to clients by gaining their feedback and adjusting IDB approach accordingly.
• Represent the Country Department to both internal and external clients and stakeholders if requested.
Country/Sector Knowledge
• Identify successful policy interventions based on rigorous impact assessments and designs programs, policies and projects accordingly.
• Act as an effective communicator and proponent of strategies to country officials and IDB stakeholders.
• Identify and implement best practices on economic research and projects using cross-sector understanding and perspective
What you will need:
Education: Master's degree or equivalent in Economics or public policy. Ph.D preferred.

Experience: You have a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, 8 preferred in economic research, economic monitoring and economic analysis.
Knowledge of policy issues and development problems in Latin American and Caribbean countries preferred, e.g. via publications, is required.
Track record of economic research and analysis on macroeconomic issues and other areas of relevance to the development objectives of the IDB.
Familiarity with the economic and social policy problems in the countries of the Andean Region.
Expertise in writing reports on development policy issues and economic situation in both Spanish and English.


Languages: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish are essential. Knowledge of French and/or Portuguese is a plus.

Systems: Strong demonstrated command of econometric and quantitative software (STATA, MATLAB, etc.),
