Market Analyst/Economist

Marathon Petroleum Company is looking for a commercial oil economist to join our team. The Economics team uses knowledge of petroleum operations and market dynamics along with oil fundamentals, price and other data to produce short and long term forecasts. The team communicates these forecasts as well as responses to queries from other parts of the organization such as senior executives, business development, finance and others to enhance strategic and tactical processes throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

Develops, maintains and updates refining industry market fundamentals Excel databases.
Analyzes refining industry data to develop forecasts, identify key takeaways of the analysis, and communicate the findings and conclusions clearly and concisely both verbally and through PowerPoint presentations.
Keeps up to date with industry trends by reading publications, newsletters and consultant reports, by attending industry conferences, and through personal contacts.
Provides innovative and insightful interpretations of petroleum market developments.
Processes, synthesizes and integrates numerous inputs at an advanced level to create organized and user-friendly data that support accurate, insightful, and in-depth research
Continuously improve industry knowledge and staying abreast of current/hot topics and contributing to written/published products to broaden and build upon subject matter knowledge.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree is required. Major discipline in Economics, Engineering, Finance or Accounting is preferred.

Prefer five years of refining or petroleum industry/consulting experience but will consider less experience as noted above.
Relevant graduate degree preferred.
Understands refinery economics, petroleum markets, business fundamentals and an awareness of current refining industry trends preferred.
Understands key analytical methods and tools and is experienced in creating and maintaining models in spreadsheets and other environments.
Knowledgeable on a wide range of topics and ability and desire to learn on a continuous basis and incorporate new information into oil market and economic analysis.
Flexible and able to work effectively and collaboratively with others to accomplish challenging assignments.
Ability to pay close attention to detail while being self-motivated, methodical and proactive in problem solving.
Highly adaptable to changing priorities and time constraints and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Able to evaluate and solve complex inter-product price relationships
Experienced in evaluating and incorporating complex external environmental influences in problem-solving
Able to work independently with limited supervision and have solid problem-solving, judgment and decision-making skills for activities of moderate complexity.
Proficiency with MS applications required (Excel, Word and PowerPoint); experience with databases helpful.
