Job description/Person specification

Specific Responsibilities
The role of Principal Economist sits within the Strategic Consultancy team of the Strategic Advisory Services practice. The role will positively contribute to the exciting challenges that the current sustained growth of the business presents. The economist will undertake a variety of tasks with minimal supervision. The Principal Economist will support the delivery and growth of the business, particularly in emerging business prospects and with new customers such as OGDs.

Knowledge, skills and Personal Qualities Required
1. Interpreting and analysing macroeconomic data.
2. Excellent writing and presentation skills, and an ability to communicate clearly with a non-economist audience
3. Appreciation of MoD and wider government processes
4. Interpersonal / presentation skills with the ability to persuade and influence with people outside own immediate area of specialism
5. Appreciation of finance and accounting
6. Commercial appreciation
7. Self-motivated with the ability to learn new industries and defence domains
8. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including a demonstrated ability to communicate complex topics to non-expert audiences;
9. Strong quantitative, analytical, and research skills;
10. Willingness to learn new skills and take on responsibility for client work and group development initiatives

Key Accountabilities
1. Researching global economic developments, economic futures and trends, generating conclusions that challenge consensus and communicating outcomes to clients and the strategic consultancy team.
2. Advising on the development of QinetiQ's economic and decision support models.
3. Teaming with other members of the practice on data analysis, visualization and modelling;
4. Delivery of high-value consultancy advice to clients, in high-growth and/or strategically important areas/domains
5. Managing engagements across multiple clients, acting as point of contact for clients and decision makers, shaping solutions to meet their needs
6. Leading initiatives to develop SAS capabilities in economic advice, review and evaluation
7. Providing thought leadership to develop solutions to complex problems
8. Identifying new business opportunities and contributing to and delivering proposals
9. Providing technical expertise and mentorship to other members of SAS
10. Promoting the QinetiQ's capabilities through public forums eg conference presentations & white papers, and representing QinetiQ at industry events

Desirable Qualifications and Requirements
1. Ideally experience -typically displayed but not limited to- over 5 or so years of working as a professional macroeconomist
2. A strong first degree in economics
3. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team; prioritize and manage multiple tasks; and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced work environment;
