Research Assistant /Research Associate

Part Time: 18.25 hours per week (50% FTE)
The appointment will be on UCL Grade 6B/7. The salary range will be Grade 6B (Research Assistant) £29,809 - £31,432 per annum; Grade 7 (Research Associate) £34,056 - £41,163 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance pro rata.

The Curriculum Open-access Resources for Economics (CORE) project has produced a free online book, The Economy, which has already been adopted for the introductory economics course at leading institutions, including some of the top economics departments in the world (University College London and SciencesPo, Paris). The project is co-ordinated from its office in the Department of Economics at University College London.

CORE received a three year grant to develop a new project titled Economy, Society, and Public Policy: An introduction to economics and quantitative social science. Funding is provided to a) develop a beta version of a new e-text introducing students not intending to specialise in economics to economics as a quantitative social science; b) develop associated teaching materials and quantitative exercises; c) train a small cadre of teachers and PGTAs to launch this course; and d) implement a well-designed, multi-methods evaluation of the initial effects of the course.

The appointee will be responsible for development of teaching and learning materials, and the development of an evaluation instrument, including experimental protocols.

The post is funded by a grant for 36 months in the first instance.

The key requirements for the position are:

• A Masters Degree or PhD or equivalent in Economics or a related quantitative social science discipline with a strong background in economics

• Ability to work collaboratively to short deadlines, prioritise workload and attention to detail

• Effective written and verbal communication skills (including the ability to communicate complex ideas to students)

• Ability to conduct and to communicate the results of statistical studies using a variety of data sets and methods

• Experience in handling data sets, analysing data and presenting the results graphically and in written form

• Familiarity with standard statistical packages

To be appointed at Grade 7 (Research Associate), the candidate will be expected to have gained a PhD in Economics or related discipline and gained independent research experience.
