The ESRC-funded Network for Integrated Behavioural Science (NIBS) is seeking to appoint a Research Associate/Fellow to be based at University of Nottingham.

NIBS is funded by the (UK) Economic and Social Research Council to undertake a large-scale, cross-disciplinary, research programme to advance understanding of how individuals and households make consumption, spending and savings decisions, and draw out the implications for public policy formulation and evaluation. It involves a high-calibre team of economists and psychologists from the world leading behavioural science research groups at the Universities of Nottingham, East Anglia and Warwick. For the current phase of funding, the work has a particular focus on developing The Science of Consumer Behaviour.

Key NIBS objectives are to develop behaviourally grounded models of consumer behaviour and decision processes and to examine the implications of such models for the operation and regulation of firms and markets. These objectives are motivated by extensive discussion with practitioners, industry and regulators; and they will be pursued through research organised into three themes. Theme 1 addresses the foundations of consumer decision making through theoretical modelling and experimental research. Theme 2 investigates the implications of behavioural science for the analysis of the behaviour of firms and markets which serve consumers. Theme 3 applies analysis to a specific area of major importance and policy concern, namely personal financial decision making. For the current post, we are seeking a candidate qualified and willing to contribute to one or both of Themes 1 and 3.

Primary tasks may include: contributing to the development of behavioural theory; developing and conducting laboratory experimental research; contributing to development of field research and/or analysis of field data. You will be encouraged to contribute at all stages of research (inception, design, analysis and dissemination). Successful candidates will also contribute to organisation of Network events.

You will be employed by the University of Nottingham and your day-to-day work will be supervised by a senior NIBS researcher at that institution. However, your overall work programme will be set by the Network's Management Group and its Director, Professor Chris Starmer, University of Nottingham. You will participate in Network-wide conferences and workshops and will be encouraged to develop links across institutions and disciplines, for example by research visits to our international partner institutions in continental Europe and the USA. There may also be opportunities for collaborative work with regulatory organisations including the Financial Conduct Authority.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD (or be demonstrably close to completing and submitting) in economics, econometrics, psychology or a cognate discipline.

This full-time post is available from 1 September 2018 for a period of two years. An earlier or later starting date may be possible, by agreement.
