NERA Economic Consulting Economics logo

NERA Economic Consulting
Berlin - Germany
S: Competitive

Description

We are seeking an experienced economist specialising in econometrics, to enhance our econometrics and programming team, as part of our European Competition practice based in Berlin. NERA's European Competition practice has advised on numerous high profile European, German and French as well as other national cases including, but not limited to, mergers and acquisitions, cartels, damage quantification, abuse of dominance, vertical and horizontal agreements and state aid.

Responsibilities may include managing small teams of economists, designing and building quantitative models and applying econometric analysis to economic and financial data; reviewing, summarising, and analysing industry trends and competitor and academic research; creating presentation materials; drafting memos and expert reports; managing large data sets and writing programmes to implement complex analyses; and participating in client meetings and conference calls.

NERA Economic Consulting is a global firm of experts dedicated to applying economic, finance, and quantitative principles to complex business and legal challenges. For over half a century, NERA's economists have been creating strategies, studies, reports, expert testimony and policy recommendations for regulatory authorities, governments and the world's leading law firms and corporations. NERA serves clients from over 25 offices across Europe, North America and Asia Pacific.

Competition work consists of economic research typically arising in the context of one of two main areas: litigation, and the review of mergers and acquisitions. Litigation involves alleged violations of EU or national competition laws, such as price fixing or the abuse of dominance. In these matters, NERA's experts work in a variety of capacities, including conducting empirical analyses to determine whether economic evidence supports the claims of either side, or estimating the damage caused by the violations.

The review of mergers and acquisitions involves conducting economic research to assess whether a proposed transaction is likely to increase market power and harm consumers. In these cases, NERA experts work with merging parties, the European Commission, national competition authorities or regulators to quantify the likely competitive effects of a transaction. This work can occur as part of a regulatory review process conducted by the authorities as well as in court.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate would have at least five year's prior experience in economic research and/or competition consulting, ideally including the management of projects and smaller teams. A PhD in economics or in a related field with strong analytical skills and an exceptional academic record is required. Experience in regression analysis/econometrics and in drafting reports is required. A high level of technical ability using statistical software packages (for example Stata or R) is required. Qualified candidates must be detail-oriented, have the ability to think analytically and critically. Native level fluency in German is required and additional fluency in European languages would be an advantage.

NERA's experts also advise on competition policy and regularly provide input to the development of guidelines and the general competition policy literature and debate.
