Senior Economist

Trulia®, a subsidiary of Zillow Group (NASDAQ: Z) is a vibrant home shopping marketplace, focused on giving home buyers, sellers and renters the information they need to make better decisions. On mobile and the Web, Trulia provides house hunters with insights and unique information about properties, neighborhoods and real estate agents. Additionally, Trulia offers data and information about schools, crimes, commute times, and the real estate market. We are currently looking for a Senior Economist to join our team in San Francisco.

The Senior Economist will use Trulia's and outside data to develop housing-market insights for Trulia's research blog (http://www.trulia.com/blog/trends/), a leading source of housing commentary and data-driven insights about the for-sale and rental markets. The Senior Economist works closely with the Chief Economist, as well as Trulia's communication, marketing, and data engineering teams. You will help improve upon the high quality research output of the Trulia Economics Team and help manage the research production process.

Responsibilities:

Research and analyze real estate market conditions, interesting real estate patterns, and past and future market trends
Maintain and improve internal databases
Provide peer review of team research projects, offering guidance and constructive feedback on methodology, code, written analysis and conclusions
Work with media to customize Trulia data and insights for their stories/inquiries
Develop and write regular housing market reports that will help homebuyers, sellers or renters navigate the housing market, which will be published on Trulia's research blog. Most projects will involve some combination of econometric analysis, data exploration, data visualization, and insightful, clear writing
Works cross-functionally with PR, product, marketing, engineering and senior management

Qualifications:

PhD or Master's in economics, statistics or related degree from a top graduate school
At least 7-10 years of economic or quantitative research. At least three years of applied research experience in the tech industry or similar is highly desired, but not required.
Familiarity with publicly available summary data and microdata
Fluency with SQL required, and preferably experienced with Hadoop/Hive/Presto
Advance experience with Stata, R, or other statistics applications
Knowledge of or demonstrated interest in housing and local economies
Solid understanding of economic concepts and econometrics
Team player with creativity, curiosity, tenacity, and conscientiousness
Driven self-starter with a strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize effectively and meet deadlines.
Strong writing skills – ideally someone who can correctly and concisely explain research findings in a consumer-friendly narrative.
Not required, but highly desired: proficiency of data visualization tools such as D3, CartoDB, and Tableau.
