Department Profile:
The Global Sustainable Finance group ("GSFâ€) is seeking a specialist in applied economics to develop and implement a robust research agenda that addresses timely topics related to sustainable investing trends, opportunities and performance. Successful candidates will have a dual passion for financial markets and sustainability as well as demonstrated expertise in quantitative research techniques, including knowledge of leading-edge approaches, data sources, statistical software and academic literature.
The Sustainable Finance Economist will be responsible for editorializing and clearly communicating economic and quantitative insights to corporate and investor audiences through a variety of formats, including client meetings, internal summary briefs and publications from Morgan Stanley's Institute for Sustainable Investing. The Sustainable Finance Economist will collaborate with the GSF team and colleagues across the firm to support thought leadership, sustainable investment strategy, client engagement and product development.
Responsibilities:
-Develop and implement a robust research agenda that addresses timely topics in sustainable investing, including market trends, investment opportunities and performance across asset classes and sectors
-Formulate economic and financial models and design analyses from the ground-up, including identification of data sources and appropriate statistical tools, related to sustainable investing as well as themes such as climate change and inclusive growth
-Editorialize and synthesize results that are meaningful to corporate and investor audiences
-Communicate clearly through written publications and in-person meetings or presentations
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications:
-PhD or Master's in Economics, Finance, Statistics, Data Science or similar, with expertise in Sustainability (e.g., sustainable investing, environmental economics, economic development, climate change and inequality)
-7+ years of work experience for Master's Degree candidates; 2+ years of work experience for PhD candidates
-Significant experience with statistical and econometric techniques (e.g., regression, attribution, classification, time series analysis) and multiple types of data (e.g., panel data, survey data, financial market data)
-Facility with Excel, statistical software packages (e.g., SAS, Stata, SPSS, Python, R), and financial market data sources (e.g., Bloomberg, Morningstar, S&P Capital IQ)
-Familiarity with Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) data frameworks and providers
-Strong writing, editorial and communication skills
-Comfort in juggling multiple priorities; strong organizational and time management skills
-Ability to work effectively as a member of a team or independently
-Preference for demonstrated experience in personnel management
-Tenacity and drive for results
-Series 7 and 63 preferred
