Location: Canary Wharf, London or Edinburgh, One Lochrin Square
Salary: £71,370 - £77,300 per annum

With the UK's exit from the EU, the CMA has an exciting and challenging agenda making it a particularly interesting place for economists to define their careers. We have a new independent Office for the Internal Markets (OIM) at the CMA, which monitors the functioning of trade within the UK, providing advice and independent advisory to the UK and devolved governments.

We are seeking a specialist in international trade economics to join the OIM as Assistant Director of Trade Economics to monitor the functioning of trade and provide economic advice to the UK and devolved governments. This work is likely to vary greatly in subject matter and be generally high-profile and analytically challenging. Specifically, you will be responsible for leading a team of economists in delivering economic analysis, assuring the quality of that analysis, and managing economic risks on OIM projects. In particular you will be the lead expert on trade analysis, leading the analytical team on the annual monitoring reports and acting as an expert adviser to analytical teams providing advice and reports to the UK and devolved governments.

Working with Economics Directors, your economic input will support the strategic direction of OIM projects and you will play a key role in determining the key areas for investigation and any economic analysis required to assess them; deciding what evidence should be gathered and how; identifying and discussing with the decision maker/s on the project how the economic analysis contributes to the overall assessment and the approach to be taken; and ensuring that economic issues and risks are properly dealt with.

A key aspect of the role is the ability to deliver through others, by providing constructive feedback on work produced by colleagues and by developing the abilities of the economists you work with. Assistant Directors of Economics are also expected to contribute to the management and intellectual development of the team of professional economists.

Applicants must have substantial experience of leading and managing teams in the design, development, management and timely delivery of economic projects and project analysis. Your proven competence as a professional economist will include practical work experience in empirical analysis and effective communication of technical economic analysis to non-technical audiences, both orally and in writing. Ideally your economics expertise will be related to international trade or at least in a closely related area of applied economics.

In return the CMA is a hugely diverse, rewarding and stimulating place to work – an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so. We offer generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days leave (increasing to 30 over five years), and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme, our employee assistance programme and favourable consideration of flexible working.
