Chief Economist

Description

The Chief Economist's primary mission is to be an effective spokesperson for Comerica with the media, with customers and in support of internal management as it relates to economic matters. This
person will particularly focus on the U.S. and the states where Comerica operates and will be assisted by an economic research assistant. The Chief Economist will be a thought leader, developer and
communicator of financial and economic analysis. Specifically, this person will:
-Analyze and interpret macroeconomic conditions and make forecasts from which Comerica can make business decisions;
-Provide focused regional economic analysis tailored to Comerica's client base;
-Track monetary policy of the central bank and present management with monthly economic data and analysis addressing how the
forecasted movement of the economic indicators might impact interest rates;
-Head economic research, generating under his/her direction regular economic briefing reports on the key issues influencing the U.S. economy and financial markets;
-Assist in asset-liability planning through formulation of interest rate forecasting;
-Act as the Comerica's principal economic spokesperson externally, and maintain a high profile that reflects well on Comerica; and
-Work closely with Comerica colleagues across all lines of business.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a recognized stature in economics and finance or banking. Addionally s/he will have:
-PhD in Economics, Finance, or Statistics or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills may be acquired.
-Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience as an economist, ideally within the financial services industry sector.
-Strong analytical skills in applied macroeconomics.
-In-depth knowledge of the various US regional economics (i.e. Midwest, California and Texas) preferred.
-Significant understanding of monetary policy, central banking, international financial markets, payment system, and banking regulation, and experience directing economic research impacting these areas.
-Relationships with the professional economist community, particularly related to the banking sector.
