There is an immediate opening for a Consultant or Sr. Consultant level hire into the Environment practice based in our London office. Candidates would hold a Master's or Ph.D. degree in Economics, Operations Research or a related discipline, an undergraduate degree in economics, engineering or natural sciences (with at least one of the graduate or undergraduate degrees in economics), a strong academic record and have between 5 and 9 years of prior relevant experience.

NERA's Energy and Environment practice offers world-recognized expert services related to the economics of markets, investments and environmental policies in the fields of renewable energy, climate change, air quality, water quality, and other environmental, health, and safety areas. We have particular expertise in providing our clients with:

strategic advice in energy and environmental markets for market entry, investments and operations decision-making and risk management; transaction support, due diligence and valuation services for energy and environmental assets including businesses, infrastructure and commodities (e.g. carbon allowance and credit portfolios);
the provision of expert testimony on energy and environmental markets and regulations in litigation and commercial arbitration cases;
the design of market-based instruments (e.g. auctions, allowance trading, taxes) to address renewable energy, climate change and air quality issues;
the evaluation of climate change and energy policies and regulations, including emissions, renewable energy and energy efficiency; and,
the assessment of economic impacts including costs, benefits and other effects of a wide variety of energy and environmental policies and regulations to markets, businesses and assets.

The responsibilities of the role include managing and assisting in the preparation of economic studies related to renewable energy, emissions and other energy and environmental issues principally for private sector clients in the energy and energy-intensive industries, but also including government agencies and NGOs. Studies are typically technical reports, presentations and expert testimony. The types of analyses include economic asset valuation, market simulation and economic impact modelling.

Other responsibilities include communicating with clients, coordinating with subcontractors, preparing proposals and qualification statements for potential projects and assisting in the identification of new projects and business opportunities. The incumbent may also play an active role in relationship management and business development; building rapport with clients and developing a clear and detailed understanding of the business and client expectations, scoping projects, writing proposals, managing projects to time and budget and contributing to or writing papers, articles and books. The successful candidate may be required to manage multiple projects concurrently and will also mentor, manage and help recruit staff. Travel may be required for selected projects.

Candidates should enjoy solving analytical and empirical problems, have strong creative, critical thinking and technical skills, possess good business development and relationship management skills, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills. She or he should also have an exceptional background in economics, experience and demonstrable proficiency in coding/programming economic and/or energy market models, experience in renewable energy, environment, climate change, and/or energy policy and markets, as well as a strong interest in such areas. The ideal candidate would have prior experience with an economic, strategy or management consultancy or have an industry background. Additional fluency in European languages, particularly German, Scandinavian or Eastern European is a plus .
