For a senior figure with an economist background, this is an opportunity to leave an indelible legacy for our country. Our large Economics and Social Science team provides the expertise and research behind decisions that create better places for people and wildlife, and support sustainable development. It's high-pressure work with both an immediate impact, and a far-reaching remit that will last for generations.
As our most senior Economist, you'll mould a highly-regarded team of specialists in your own innovative image, and instil a thorough and effective approach to research and analysis.
Topics could range from the value of the country's Natural Capital or the business case for a flood and water infrastructure investment, to changes arising due EU exit or the biodiversity of our woodlands. And by carefully drawing out the insights we need, you'll provide the objective view that ensures we make the right decisions.
Reporting to the Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate, you'll also lead on vital policy issues, including the Government's 25 Year Environment Plan, and joint-sponsor a £1m flood research programme. In turn, we'll ask you to build strong relationships with influential characters at the Department for Environment, OFWAT, HM Treasury and more will be essential.
It's a challenge for someone used to the nuances of working with or within government. A degree and relevant economics qualification is a minimum. You'll be a persuasive communicator and respected manager with the gravitas to represent us externally, and political nous to perform under pressure and public scrutiny.
As well as giving shape to solutions and strategies that scale complex issues, you'll also an active role in evolving our organisation – embodying our values and enhancing the wellbeing of our staff.
High-profile meetings could occur anywhere, and the team's based across the country. So as well as inspiring excellence both in person and remotely, it's important you've the flexibility to travel. Â
