An economic analyst is required to capture and evaluate the performance and impact of the National Measurement System. You will need to use economic principles to identify plausible mechanisms through which impact is generated. Furthermore, econometric analysis will be used to test these ideas and quantify the impact of an activity. This information will be used to help policy makers make more informed investment decisions and maximise the impact we have on the UK economy.

Key duties

There is an opportunity for the right candidate to develop in the role and to undertake original research and study for a doctorate. Furthermore, as part of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills wider involvement in the work of the department is possible in partnership with Government analysts and economists.

You will need a degree in economics and an interest in exploring the role that public institutions play in supporting innovation and economic growth. Ideally, you will also have an interest in scientific and technological developments.

Key skills and experience required

Strong candidates will combine a strong interest in the economics of science policy with the following attributes:
Analytical Skills - Analysts need strong technical skills in order to understand statistical methodologies including their limitations.
Communication Skills - You will be expected to present your findings in a way that is understandable to non-specialists. In particular, you need to be able to write and speak clearly in order to communicate complex ideas.
Critical Thinking - You will need to use data analysis to reach clear conclusions.
Approach – You will be expected to have an open, flexible and pragmatic style, meeting the needs of a wide range of stakeholders
Attention to Detail - You will need to pay attention to detail in order to perform accurate analysis.
