As an Economist, you will deliver high profile analysis to build programme and project management capability and work closely with leading experts in transport appraisal, Department for Transport colleagues, and the HS2 Ltd Commercial and Technical Directorates.

Economic Analysis is multi-disciplinary department with economists, statisticians, operational researchers and transport modellers. The team works closely with analysts and policy colleagues in the DfT, along with technical experts and contractors within HS2 Ltd to provide robust evidence to support the HS2 Ltd Executive Committee and Board of Directors, the DfT High Speed Rail Board and Ministers. The Economic Analysis team are working to ensure the proposed HS2 scheme is supported by robust analysis and evidence, and the full range of potential impacts of the scheme are fully understood and measured as far as possible.

In this key role your remit will include delivering analysis to support the case for HS2 Phase One and Two (including the Strategic Case, Economic Case and Financial Case) by using outputs from transport models, revenue and financial models to present a full and compelling evidence base. You will also provide analysis to support value for money advice, based on sound appraisal techniques, to decision-makers on changes to the scope of the HS2 project, and variations to route/station options.

The successful candidate will have a graduate or post-graduate degree in economics (or related subject) with knowledge of applying micro-economic principles to policy/investment decisions. Excellent analytical skills are required to design and deliver a complex programme of analysis, and an ability to understand and distil complex arguments into key principles is essential.
