Head of Research

We are interested in strong research professionals who hold a PhD in a relevant subject area, such as economics, statistics, public policy, public health, etc. coupled with demonstrable experience (minimum 7 yrs) managing and/or providing technical guidance to impact evaluations, panel surveys and cross-sectional surveys where you will have led multi-layered teams and been involved in all project phases.

You should:

Be broadly conversant with different branches of micro development economics, with experience in impact evaluation and panel data particularly important;
Be a good applied econometrician and have a strong knowledge of Stata or similar statistical tool, and practical experience in power calculations and statistical sampling;
Have published a number of academic papers/research policy documents and other such literature and be keen to continue doing so, particularly in topics related to poverty research;
Have lived or worked extensively (minimum 2 years) in a developing country environment, ideally sub-Saharan Africa, and have demonstrable experience of managing operations remotely;
Have had the responsibility for managing portfolios of projects and large budgets, and specifically had previous experience in the management of field work, both quantitative and qualitative (experience with CAPI/electronic surveys preferred);
Be a strong people manager and inspirational leader with experience in managing a diverse range of staff from senior academics to local interviewers. You will have a passion for developing your team to continually increase their expertise and talent;
Be a team player as well as a leader. Additionally you will possess outstanding liaison and negotiating skills to be able to effectively engage with clients and staff alike;
Be very comfortable with IT and software and it would be a benefit to have knowledge and experience of software development processes;
Ideally have spent time in both the private and academic sectors. In any event you should have the 'big picture' perspective whilst understanding the importance of detail and possess the ability to juggle competing demands on your time.
