Université Paris Descartes - LIRAES (EA4470)
Paris - France
S: Competitive

The Interdisciplinary Applied Research Laboratory in Health Economics (LIRAES EA4470) at the Université Paris Descartes, located in Paris (France), is opening a postdoctoral position in health economics. This post-doctoral position comes within the framework of a research project financed by the European Commission: the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), Europe's largest public-private initiative aiming to speed up the development of better and safer medicines for patients. This project aims at exploring long-term care use of elderly people facing autonomy loss in the European-Union.

Position description:

The postdoctoral fellowship is starting in October or November 2014. The fellowship provides advanced training to applied economists and prepares fellows for positions in academia. Training involves mentored research experience with faculty. Fellows receive a competitive salary and benefits, and may also gain teaching experience. The position will be based in Paris, France, but will involve short research trips to Roma, Italy, since the project is developed in collaboration with the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

Recruiter:

Université Paris Descartes is one of the French largest universities. It is a funding member of Sorbonne Paris Cité, one of France's major university consortiums bringing together four Parisian universities and four higher education and research institutes. The LIRAES (EA 4470) is the health economics research centre of the Université Paris Descartes. It is part of the Health Policy department at Sorbonne Paris Cité, along with Sciences-Po Paris, and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique (EHESP). The main line of research of LIRAES is the economics of aging and long-term care. The LIRAES mission is to provide health economics analyses of health policies and interventions in that field, and to explore health technology assessment issues. Our offices are located at 45 rue des Saints-Pères 75006 Paris.

Description of the project:

Under the responsibility of the co-director of the LIRAES, and under the scientific co-direction of two faculty members, the fellow will explore the relationship between autonomy loss (using frailty index and activities of daily living measures) and medical and non-medical resource use in the elderly. This analysis will be carried out using the Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). SHARE is a multidisciplinary and cross-national cohort of individual data on health, socio-economic status and social and family relationships of more than 80,000 respondents aged 50 or over. Eleven countries contributed to the 2004 SHARE baseline study. They are a balanced representation of the various regions in Europe, ranging from Scandinavia (Denmark and Sweden) through Central Europe (Austria, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, The Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia, Slovenia, Hungary, and the Netherlands) to the Mediterranean (Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Greece). Respondents were interviewed about their life history. Different fields such as childhood health, education, job career, family life, housing, etc. were surveyed and provide useful information on life course.
