Drawing on academic literature in economics and game theory as well as marketplace best practices, this individual will partner with our data scientists, auctioneers, customer researchers, and senior executives to develop and execute a testing plan around the rules of customer engagement on our platform. The ideal individual has a strong academic background in economics and game theory combined with 5 - 10 years of practical experience in designing the marketplace dynamics. This individual should have strong analytic skills as well as the ability to interact with and influence senior leadership.

Do you want to help define the rules of engagement for the world's largest online real estate marketplace? Auction.com is transforming the way real estate is bought and sold, and we're seeking someone who can help optimize our platform in ways that fairly balance the needs of sellers and buyers. Drawing on academic literature in economics and game theory as well as marketplace best practices, this individual will partner with our data scientists, auctioneers, customer researchers, and senior executives to develop and execute a testing plan around the rules of customer engagement on our platform. This is a highly visible role with enormous potential to influence the future of our marketplace, so candidates must possess (1) a deep theoretical understanding of marketplace mechanics, (2) the technical skills to implement and analyze experiments within an active marketplace, and (3) the persuasive ability to implement change based on experimental results.
Role
Draw on academic theory and marketplace best practices to design and execute experiments aimed at building the most efficient and fair marketplace experience.
Work with the business (line, marketing, product) to understand business problems and experimentally develop solutions.
Analyze existing marketplace data using sophisticated data analysis techniques to derive meaningful insights that the business can clearly act on to drive business results.
Look for key opportunities and take a proactive approach to analyses; initiate proactive projects to uncover key insights.
Educate and evangelize data driven approaches across the organization.
Requirements
Self-Starter, with an extraordinary ability to execute multiple projects under tight deadlines that drive key business results.
Advanced proficiency in statistical analysis, quantitative analytics, forecasting/predictive analytics, multivariate testing, and optimization algorithms.
Ability to understand business problems from a high level and partner with individuals throughout the organization to tackle strategic solutions using advanced analytics and data insights.
Strong domain knowledge in the latest tools and techniques in data science.
Substantial experience in analyzing online user behavior to generate insights about user experience, business opportunities, and product strategies.
Ability to partner and collaborate and communicate well with executive leadership (both technical and non-technical).
Passionate about the Internet, emerging web technologies, and community building with a demonstrated track record of visionary execution.
Advanced data accessing skills (e.g., SQL) and manipulating data (Excel, Python, etc.); ideally experience in programming scripts to extract data.
Advanced experience in at least one major statistical tool (e.g. SAS, SPSS, R).
Excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to interact and understand academic theory / technical subjects / emerging technologies and their relevance to the marketplace.
Masters or Doctorate degree in a economics, operations research, mathematics/statistics, or a related field from a top tier University; must have some academic and theoretical experience in game theory.
Bonus points for experience and/or passion in: Web Analytics (in particular Omniture), Mobile Analytics, Real Estate, Mashing up external data (e.g. location, census, etc.) with internal data, No SQL Technologies (e.g. Hadoop).
