The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (OST-R) is looking for full-time and part-time permanent Social Scientist position(s) to support the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center's Economic Analysis Division or other divisions within the Volpe Center. OST-R coordinates the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) research, training and data analysis programs and is charged with advancing rigorous analysis and fostering the deployment of cross-cutting technologies to improve our Nation's transportation system. The Volpe Center, part of DOT/OST-R, in Cambridge, MA, has been helping the transportation community navigate the most challenging problems for over 40 years. Volpe's mission is to improve transportation by anticipating and addressing emerging issues and advancing technical, operational, and institutional innovations across all modes. This position is located in the Kendall Square area in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Social Scientist, serves as a member of a team, conducts research and analysis, evaluates the results, and prepares reports and presentations. S/he will provide expertise in the areas of survey research, market research, research on innovative products and services, marketing, and human behavior. S/he will develop survey questionnaires and other data collection forms, prepares sample designs, and provides study management, assembles focus groups and structured interviews to aid in the survey process. S/he is responsible for extracting, assembling, cleaning, and analyzing data including survey data using appropriate statistical tests. S/he utilizes strong communication skills both orally and in writing to report and discuss research results and analysis.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who has demonstrated an ability to apply social science analytical skills to address significant policy, regulatory, technological change or organizational performance issues. The employee should have experience synthesizing information, conducting primary research, and communicating recommendations persuasively. The employee will demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams both within his/her organization and crossing organizational boundaries.
